About the program

In the arid and semi-arid lands of northern Kenya lies the culturally rich and resilient community of Samburu County. For generations, the Samburu people have preserved a deeply rooted pastoralist way of life shaped by tradition, environmental challenges, and limited access to formal economic opportunities. Within this context, Samburu women have long carried the invisible backbone of the community—raising children, managing households, and sustaining family survival—often with very limited access to education, income-generating skills, or financial independence. Historically, many women have depended on livestock-based livelihoods controlled largely by men, leaving them vulnerable during droughts, economic shocks, and climate instability. Yet, despite these challenges, Samburu women are known for their extraordinary strength, resilience, and cultural pride. When given the opportunity, they quickly transform skills into survival, and survival into progress. This volunteer program is designed to support Samburu women in transitioning from vulnerability to empowerment through practical skills training and sustainable livelihood development. We are seeking committed international and local volunteers to join hands with communities in building long-term, women-led economic independence. Your contribution will not be temporary assistance—it will be part of a lasting transformation. As a volunteer, you will work closely with local women groups and community leaders to: - Provide hands-on training in vocational skills such as tailoring, beadwork, handicrafts, or small-scale production - Support women in developing small business and income-generating activities - Facilitate basic financial literacy, savings groups (table banking), and cooperative development - Mentor women in leadership, confidence-building, and entrepreneurship mindset - Assist in designing sustainable community empowerment initiatives Your involvement will contribute to long-term change that includes: - Increased financial independence for women and their families - Growth of women-led micro-enterprises and cooperative groups - Improved access to skills that reduce dependency and vulnerability - Stronger household resilience during droughts and economic hardship - A shift from survival-based livelihoods to sustainable economic empowerment Beyond your impact, this journey offers a profound human connection: - Deep immersion into the traditions, heritage, and daily life of the Samburu people - The opportunity to work closely with women who embody resilience and hope - Meaningful cultural exchange in one of Kenya’s most unique regions - Hands-on experience in grassroots development and women empowerment work - The privilege of witnessing transformation at its most human level. This is not simply a volunteer placement—it is a partnership in dignity, resilience, and transformation. By standing alongside Samburu women, you become part of a larger story: one where skills replace dependency, confidence replaces limitation, and opportunity becomes a lasting legacy for future generations. Together, we can help unlock the full potential of Samburu women—because when a woman is empowered, an entire community rises.
